Best time to post on YouTube

Three slots worth testing, what YouTube's ranking actually rewards, and why a table of hours is a hypothesis rather than an answer.

Three slots to start with

Thu16:00Published ahead of the evening watch window
Sat09:00Weekend morning, long-session viewing
Sun15:00Sunday afternoon, the strongest long-form block

These are in your audience's local time, which is the part most advice leaves out. If your audience is elsewhere, the calculator converts them into your own hours so you schedule the right instant.

What YouTube actually rewards

YouTube is a search and recommendation engine before it is a feed, so publish time matters least of any network here — a video can find its audience months later. What the timing does affect is the first 24–48 hours of velocity, which the recommendation system reads as an early signal.

Format matters more than the hour

Publish a few hours before your audience's peak watching window, not during it, so the video has impressions and a click-through rate on record when the window opens. The thumbnail and title do more for performance than the hour, by a wide margin.

Worth knowing before you automate YouTube: The Data API works immediately but uploads consume quota aggressively — a single upload is expensive against the default daily allocation. Anything doing volume needs a quota extension, which is a form and a wait.

How to test this properly

Because discovery is search-led, timing tests are noisy. Test thumbnails and titles first; they move the numbers by multiples where timing moves them by percentages.

The method that works on every network: change one variable, hold everything else, and give it long enough that you are measuring the change rather than the noise. Two weeks on a fast network is not enough — give it four.

Questions

Does upload time matter on YouTube?

Least of any platform here. Discovery is search and recommendation driven, so videos surface for months. Timing affects the first 48 hours of velocity, which is a real but small input.

Should I publish before or during peak hours?

Before, by a few hours. The video needs impressions and click-through data on record before the recommendation system decides how hard to push it.

What about Shorts?

Shorts behave much more like TikTok — completion-driven, less time-sensitive, and largely decoupled from your subscriber base.

Does the description matter for timing?

Not for timing, but the first 157 characters are what shows above the fold and what search reads. Front-load it.
